Ambergris Caye is the largest of several hundred islands in the northern most waters of Belize, Central America.

This simple island is a tourist destination, without Hi-rise Hotels or big city public transportation. There are three main North/South streets. Front street is closest to the two and three story apartment buildings that face onto the beaches. The beaches are mostly shells and you will need footgear. There are many piers (every 100 meters or so)where a tourist can rent a boat for diving, deep sea fishing, or sailboating to other islands. Many piers have bars where you might order a rum drink with a parsol in it. You will land in a small plane on the grass lawns of the soccer field. You should call ahead to make reservations, but can usually find accommodations even without them. There are small shops on Back Street (guess what the middle street is called) including a grocery store. Buy the bottled water in the large size. Avoid the water, even from the apartments. The beer is Belikan, which can be bought by the case from the distributer on the south side of the island. The roads are not paved and the speed bumps are rope hawsers, which are sufficient to slow the bicycle and golf cart traffic. There are few working auto's. and they are not needed because you can walk everywhere on the island.

Do not stay anywhere but the Xanadu hotel when visiting Ambergris Caye. By far the best pool on the island, and the owners treat you like family (a good thing in this case). Stay in any of the rooms in the hurricane proof huts, all have views of the ocean or the tropical garden pool. Easy walk to town, or take one of the complimentary bikes. The staff can arrange diving, snorkelling, or fishing trips.
