- Rockhampton - town on the Fitzroy River and the commercial centre of the region. Noted for its historic buildings dating from the late-19th century. Dreamtime Cultural Centre worth a visit - provides displays relating to region's Aboriginal past. Rockhampton promotes itself as the "beef capital of Australia", with many pubs and restaurants serving large steaks.
- Yeppoon & Around - on the coast north-east of Rockhampton. Popular beach resort - beaches at (north to south): Farnborough, Yeppoon Town, Lammermoor, Kemp Beach, Mulambin, Kinka Beach and Emu Park. Town of Byfield to the north - potteries and state parks in region. Great Keppel Island offshore.
- Mount Morgan - old gold mining town located in hills south-west of Rockhampton. Museum and railway tours.
- Gladstone & Around - industrial port situated on the shores of Port Curtis. Industry tours. Tondoon Botanic Gardens south of town. Offshore, the Southern Reef Islands including resorts on Heron Island and Wilson Island - diving, snorkelling, bird-watching. On the coast to the south of Gladstone are the tourist resorts of Agnes Water and Town of 1770 - Agnes Water contains the most northerly surfing beach on Australia's east coast.
- Central Highlands - centred around the town of Emerald. Gem-fossicking at nearby Rubyvale and Sapphire. Carnarvon National Park.
