Dachau, in Bavaria, Germany, was the site of the first Nazi concentration camp. This dubious distinction has cast a pall over the rest of this small and pleasant town on the outskirts of Munich proper. Dachau served as a staging ground to ship prisoners to Eastern death camps in Poland and elsewhere, though 32,000 people were killed there directly.
