By Air:

By road: Siliguri is the nearest town. Ample transport is available to Darjeeling from here. The most popular modes of transport are Taxi (usually shared by 3-4 passengers), Share Jeep (10 passengers) and bus.

By train: New Jalpaiguri (NJP) is the nearest railhead, which is well connected from most important stations. A small 'Toy train' connects NJP junction to Darjeeling. The route is very picturesque and has been widely written about by many authors including Mark Twain. Normally, you would only find Tourists using this mode, as the locals prefer the much faster road route.

Bagdogra, near Siliguri, is the nearest airport. Jet Airways, Indian and Deccan air operate a limited number of flights to connect Bagdogra to Kolkata and New Delhi. From here, you could take a Taxi directly to Darjeeling or take one to NJP from where you could take the 'Toy Train'
