Golden Ring
From World travel guide
The Golden Ring is a collection of historic Russian cities located northeast of Moscow. Many of them were located a distance from each other that could be traveled in 24 hours by horse. Nearly all of them are becoming popular tourist destinations now for their architectural sites as well as their locally produced traditional Russian handicrafts.

Cities
In Soviet times, tourism officials created an 'official' list of eight cities which comprise the Golden Ring:
- Vladimir
- Suzdal
- Ivanovo
- Sergeev Posad (formally Zagorsk)
- Rostov Veliki
- Yaraslavl
- Kostoma
- Pereslavl-Zalesskiy.

Understand
As much of the architecture in these cities is similar, visiting all of them is hardly recommended even for visitors on extended stays in Russia. The most fascinating of the main Golden Ring cities is Suzdal, which is located just near Vladimir and thus the the two make a good combo. The other city to visit is probably Sergeev Posad, which is easily accessible from Moscow. For visitors with a bit more time, Yaraslavl may be worth a visit as well, perhaps combined with a trip to Sergeev Posad.
