Talk

English is official, Spanish is spoken by a decent sized minority. There are also lots of Persians and Afghans who may speak Farsi.

Sleep

Herndon has many, many hotels and motels because it's situated near Dulles Airport. Three of the 9/11 hijackers that crashed into the Pentagon stayed at the Marriott in Hotel.

Stay Safe

A very well-organised and heavily armed street-gang known as Mara Salvatrucha aka "MS-13" operates in (among other places in the U.S.) the Northern Virginia suburbs of D.C. Perhaps there is some irony that the gang developed out of para-military and actual military organisations which were involved in the wars and revolutions of the 1980's and 1990's in Central America. As if this isn't scary enough, MS-13 seems to have actively sought to locate itself in the very communities such as Herndon in which many of the F.B.I. agents tasked with hunting them live.

Not so long ago, a freshman at the Herndon High school was shot because he belonged to a rival gang.

So, given the above how does one stay safe in Herndon? Probably it won't affect you at all, however you might want to take the usual precautions that a traveller takes in big cities in the U.S.: Try not to look like a gang member. Treat very-slow moving automobiles with caution. Avoid groups of adolescents on the street, even if you are a teenager yourself. If you are in town to visit the high school then talk with some of the teachers first about what to look out for.
