Iasi is the most important historical, economic, and cultural center in Northeast Romania.
The archaeological researches have discovered in this area, traces of the ancient Culture of Cucuteni , flourishing some 5000 years ago. Iasi City is documentary certified from the 14th century during the reign of Alexandru cel Bun.
The name of Iasi City is bound up with the so-called "golden period" of the Romanian culture. At the beginning of the 19th century, here was established the first high education school in Romanian. In 1860 Al.I.Cuza founded, in Iasi, the first university within Romania.
Many Romanian personalities lived, studied, worked and created in Iasi. The city is well known as a major cultural city.

Romanians generally have three meals a day - breakfast, lunch and dinner. Breakfast usually consists of bread with butter, jam, cheese, ham and also eggs. Romanians generally have tea or coffee. A traditional Romanian lunch consists of different kinds of soups, a main course and dessert. Dinner is quite similar to lunch, but a bit smaller (without soup).
Soups play an important part at mealtimes and are usually rich and thick. One of the national dish of Romania is called "sarmale", made with rice mixed with hacked meat, all wraped on cabbage leaves. "Mamaliga" (maize flour mush) is often served with cheese and cream and is especially associated with the traditional Romanian life. Another specific dish is called "mici" and is mainly made from a mixture of different types of hacked meat. In restaurants and cafés one can find delicious cakes and ice-cream, specific to this area.
Drink
"Tuica" (tsuica) is the national strong drink of Romania and is made from fruits (especially plums, peach and pears). Western drinks, such as whisky, gin or brandy, can be obtained in most bars but are expensive. All kind of bottled beer can be found, both from the West countries and Romania.
But WINE is the national drink in Romania. Iasi area is one of the famous regions with vineyards & wineries in the country.
