Understand

Jeddah has been a port and trading city for centuries. Today, it is the major commercial center of Saudi arabia. It also has many government offices.

It is also the main entry point, either by air or sea, for pilgrims making the Hajj pilgrimage to Mecca and Medina, the two holiest cities of Islam. Both are a few hours inland from Jeddah.

Get in

By plane

Jeddah has an international airport with flights to many destinations.

The special terminals (two of them) for Hajj pilgrims are the largest buildings (by roof area) in the world. They are basically enormous fiberglass fabric tents on reinforced concrete poles and steel cables. Driving to the normal non-Hajj terminal, you pass between the two. In season, this lets you admire rows of 747s parked alongside the Hajj terminals.

Foreigners living in Saudi can often get sensational discounts on outbound flights during the Hajj. Airlines from Muslim countries are flying in many loads of pilgrims, and do not not want to go back empty.
