Jeffrey's Bay is a town in South Africa near Port Elizabeth that is famous for its surfing grounds and beaches.

Understand

Jeffrey's Bay is South Africa's most famous place for surfing. It is often referred to as J-Bay and you will see many people with J-Bay shirts around. The town became so popular after the movie Endless Summer came out in the 1960s. Since than it has expanded and today concentrates mostly on surfing. It is also host to International tournaments and championships.

Get in

By car

Follow the N2 from Port Elizabeth or the Garden Route and use the turn of to Jeffrey's Bay.

By bus

The BazBus stops on its way from Cape Town to Port Elizabeth in J-Bay and there are a number of private bus companies offering tours from Port Elizabeth, too.

By train

There is no train connection.

By plane

The nearest airport is Port Elizabeth Airport, which is approximately 75km away.

You can easily walk around in town.

You are here for surfing, you don't need to see anything else!

During the winter month you will see dolphins and whales passing by.

Do

Despite surfing you can just relax at the beach. Best beaches for that are Main Beach (in the town) and Kabeljous-on-Sea (a few kilometres north)

Surfing

J-Bay is the town for surfers in South Africa. The best location for surfing is Super Tubes east of the Main Beach. Other spots are Kitchen Windows, Magna Tubes, Point and Albatross.

Buy

Along the main road are a big number of shops selling surferware and this is the place to buy an exclusive Billabong or Quicksilver shirt of Jeffrey's Bay.

Eat

Nearly all known fast-food chains are present in J-Bay, but there are also a number of good restaurants like The Whaleskipper at the Marina Martinique Harbour and Le Grotto at Da Gama Road.
