Lexington (Kentucky)
From World travel guide
Lexington is in Kentucky.
Lexington sits at a very ideal location in the middle of the Eastern United States on a line dividing the North from the South. It is within a days' drive of the vast majority of the United States' population, perhaps one factor contributing to the city's overly deficient "airport." Two interstates, I-75 (north/south) and I-64 (east/west), effectively slice up Fayette County (of which Lexington in the county seat). You will find that most of Lexington is to the south and west of these two interstates and that you will have to abandon them to explore the city as they are both greatly offset from the downtown area. A ring road, known locally as "New Circle Road," completely encircles the urban core, though it is not part of the interstate system nor is it connected directly to it. A second, outer semi-ring road also encircles the southern (and most populated) half of the city. It is called Man O' War Boulevard, named after the famous race horse.

Get around
Like most small and mid-sized Midwestern cities, Lexington does not possess a wide-reaching public transportation network. The system that is in place, LexTran, is fairly inexpensive though equally inefficient and infrequent. Do yourself a favor and either rent a car or bring your own along.

Despite the relative small size of this South-North straddling city, Lexington offers a surprisingly delightful palette of interesting activities. Whether you choose to explore some of the world-class and stunning horse farms ringing the city (especially to the north and west), hit up some of the surprisingly upscale shopping venues(Fayette Mall, Hamburg Pavilion, Victorian Square downtown), take in a play at the Downtown Arts Center or the Lexington Opera House, tour the oldest university west of the Appalachian Mountains (Transylvania University), catch an insanely popular UK basketball game (Rupp Arena) or sample one of the myriad great restaurants that have sprung up all over town, you can be sure your experience here will not be a bland one. And, once you've returned safely back home, you can tell everyone, "yes, they do wear shoes in Kentucky!"
If you are touring through and want to see some horse country, than you should include the "Kentucky Horse Park" in your travel plans. The park not only offers a museum, nice walks, views of famous racehorses and lots of bluegrass, but is also the host of some very large horse events. Probably the most high profile is the Rolex, Horse Trials, Three Day Event which takes place every Spring. These horse trials are also used as Olympic selection trails so you can expect to see some world class horses and riders.

A startling array of restaurants, suiting a variety of tastes and budgets, can be found in this surprisingly cultured town. Massive chain restaurants, typical in most American cities and towns, can be found here, as well as a great number of privately owned and operated establishments. The city's college town atmosphere and affluent lifestyle contribute to this relatively small metropolitan area's great culinary offerings. You will find the greatest concentrations of restaurants around the Fayette Mall and Hamburg Pavilion shopping areas and also downtown and scattered about the rest of town.
