Kew is situated in South London. It is best known as the home of Kew Gardens and a UNESCO World Heritage List site.

Get in

Kew is located some 8 miles south-west of central London, on the south bank of the River Thames. Because of congestion, driving is not to be particularly recommended.

Kew is served by two rail stations. Kew Bridge is served by National Rail trains out of London Waterloo station. Kew Gardens station is served by Underground trains on the District line from central London, and by National Rail trains on the North London line that wanders around the north of London without ever reaching the center.

  • Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, tel 8332 5000. This historic and beautiful garden features elements that illustrate significant periods of the art of gardens from the 18th to the 20th centuries, as well as a plant collection second to none in the world. Since their creation in 1759, the gardens have made a significant and uninterrupted contribution to the study of plant diversity and economic botany. The gardens cover 300 acres (120 hectares) and are over a mile long. They contain several major glasshouse complexes, not least the famous Palm House opened in 1848, together with a museum and several follies. The Main Gate is off Kew Green (if coming from Kew Bridge station) and Victoria Gate is off Kew Road and opposite Kew Gardens station. Open 9:30am-4.15pm (winter); 9.30am-6pm (summer M-F); 9.30am-7:30pm (summer Sa-Su); last admission 30 mins before close; glasshouses close an hour before garden close. £8.50 (adults); £6.50 (concessions); free (children).
