Understand
In the Victorian era this area was a fashionable place to live as it was right on the doorstep of the Crystal Palace. Nowadays its not so fashionable and many people look down their noses at Penge, but its a nice cosy little place.
Not a lot of people know this, well apart from the Danes of course, but Penge is the Danish word for money. Perhaps this hints at some kind of Viking history for the town, though most historians believe the name of the town is derived from the ancient Celtic word "Penceat" which means "edge of wood". As it is situated near the former Great North Wood between London and Croydon this would make sense.
