Get in
The FAL train from Bari takes 1h 3min.

Understand
Matera is a fairly big city. One of its quarters is the old city. Just outside the old city is the Sassi. Cave housed dig into the limestone mountains. The sassi are located on both sides ofa valley. On the north side Sassi Baresi have been partially commercially developed as offices and housing. The Sassi Caveosi on the south side are the historically interesting.
See
- Old city. From the station walk down via Roma to Pl Venet and take the stairs down into he old city.
- Caveoso cave churches. Etrance to the four main ones is €6.
Eat
There are many restaurants in the old city as well as outside.
Drink
- Cafe Stone Age close to St. Antonius churchin th Caveoso is a nice little terrace with flowers in pots and cold beers from all over the world.
Sleep
There are hotels in Matera but the many B&B's in the old town is more interesting.
Cope
There is a tourist office at Viti Marco and one at the old city. The Viti Marco one has english speaken staff which is very helpful and will give you a map and a booklet on Basilicata
