Understand
Medina is the second holy city of Islam. The Prophet Mohammed fled to Medina when he was driven out of Mecca, and taught there for some years before his triumphant return to Mecca.

Get in
The Muslim hajj pilgrimage includes a visit to Medina. Today the most common route is to arrive in Jeddah by plane, and get on a special pilgrims' bus to Mecca and Medina, and come back to fly home in a couple of weeks. A century ago, it was ship to Jeddah, then on foot or by camel.
Like Mecca, Medina is strictly off limits to non-Moslems. Since this restriction carries the death penalty, travellers would be wise to heed it!}}
