Understand
Merrickville modestly claims to be Canada’s prettiest village, a claim not without merit on a sunny summer day. The village center consists entirely of picturesque Victorian-era stone houses, and it's perched by the waters of the Rideau Canal.

Merrickville is an easy one-hour drive south of Ottawa.
By boat
The Rideau Canal between Kingston and Ottawa passes through Merrickville.

Central Merrickville is easily covered on foot.

Merrickville's labeled sights are all rather low-key, the real fun is in walking around, admiring the houses and popping into shops.
- Blockhouse Museum, by the canal. Built in 1832, this tiny little fortress was built to house up to 50 soldiers guarding the Rideau Canal.
- Industrial Heritage Complex. Covers a number of old buildings in and around the dam and the mill, one of which has been turned into a small museum on the history of industry in Merrickville. Free entry.

Merrickville is chock full of arts and crafts shops.
- Village Foundry, next to the locks. Canada's oldest still-operating iron foundry, producing anything and everything from cast iron.
Eat & Drink
Almost all restaurants in Merrickville are or at least claim to be English pubs, offering similar menus of fish and chips, bangers and mash, etc.
- Goose and Gridiron. A large selection of pub grub plus a few American favorites like burgers and clam chowder, and a vast selection of beers on tap. Mains $10-20. Open every day from 11 AM.
