Understand
Michigan is the only state in the Continental US that has significant non-contiguous parts. The Lower Peninsula has the majority of the population, while the Upper Peninsula, separated by Lake Michigan, is more rural. Stick out your left hand (palm away from you) and you have a map of the lower half of Michigan. Stick out your left hand again with the palm facing you and your fingers pointing to the right and you have an approximate map of the upper half of Michigan.
