Located in the Mid-Atlantic region of the United States of America, New York state was one of the original 13 British colonies. Often overshadowed by its eponymous megacity, the state has incredible historical sites throughout the north.

Some people say that New York has two regions: New York City, and "Upstate", i.e., everything else. In fact New York is a large state with a number of distinct regions.
