There are a number of small islands dotted around the coast of New Zealand. Some are uninhabited and some are nature sanctuaries.

- Great Barrier Island - Largest island in the Hauraki Gulf 90 km NE of Auckland
- Kawau Island - Approx. 8 km off the coast from Sandspit north of Auckland in the Hauraki Gulf
- Little Barrier Island - Situated between Great Barrier Island and Kawau approx. 85 km NE of Auckland in the Hauraki Gulf
- Rangitoto Island - The "youngest" island in the Hauraki Gulf off the coast of Auckland
- Tiritiri Matangi Island - Wildlife sanctuary approx. 25 km north of Auckland in the Hauraki Gulf
- Waiheke Island - Most populated island in the Hauraki Gulf off the coast of Auckland
- White Island - Active volcano in the Bay of Plenty.
- Kapiti Island - Wildlife sanctuary off the Kapiti Coast.
- Mana Island - Off the coast from Porirua city.
- Somes Island - (Matiu/Somes Island) in Wellington Harbour.
