By Car

Providence is served by TF Green Airport, which is south of the city off exit 13 on I-95. It is easy to get to by car, but R.I.P.T.A. (Rhode Island Public Transit Authority) has a regular bus service to downtown Providence.

By Train

Providence is a part of the MBTA's local commuter rail network, it is $6 for a one way trip from Boston and the trip generally takes about an hour and does not operate on weekends and many holidays.

Providence is also on Amtrak's Acela and Regional routes continuing to the south and west to Washington and Virginia, but from the north (Boston) it is most economical to take the MBTA. Service is rather frequent and unlike the MBTA, operates on weekends.

By Bus

R.I.P.T.A. also runs bus services across all of Rhode Island and throughout Providence, with a central hub in Kennedy Plaza.

Both Bonanza Bus Lines and Greyhound Bus offer services between Providence and nearby towns and cities.

By Air

Providence's TF Green Airport offers many low cost and regular flights to many cities in the United States. Boston's Logan Airport is much larger and is generally used for most international flights. To get from Logan to downtown Providence, it is easily accessible by car (the trip generally about 40 minutes) or by train by taking Boston's Silver Line to South Station and taking a train to Providence.

Get around

Downtown Providence is very compact, and can easily be covered walking. There is some parking available throughout the city, but R.I.P.T.A's public transport network is extensive and a good alternative to driving.

Two of the downtown lines are run completely on natural gas trolleys, and cover most of historic Providence. Base fare is $1.50, though students from some local college ride for free with their student IDs.

Do

Visit Thayer Street, the electic shopping district next to Brown University. Particularly worthwhile is the always inventive shop Oop. Then stop at the Creperie for an inexpensive snack -- the best crepes in Rhode Island. (Perhaps the only ones.)
