Regions
Some of the state's regions of interest are:
- Agulhas Negras - Mountain climbing at Itatiaia
- Greater Rio (Grande Rio) - includes the State's capital and neighbouring Niteroi.
- Green Coast (Costa Verde) - Forest meets beaches, islands and history in Paraty, Angra dos Reis and Ilha Grande
- Lakes region (Região dos Lagos) - Coastal cities such as sophisticated Buzios and popular Cabo Frio
- Serrana - Breathtaking mountains near Petropolis and Teresopolis
Cities
Angra dos Reis - Beautiful two hour coastline including 365 islands
Itaguaí - small suburb about 1 hour from the city
Nova Iguaçu - Infamous for it's violence and crime, the city is home to Brasil's only volcano (dormant)
Três Rios - Where three of the state's rivers meet. Near the border of Minas Gerais
Penedo - A Brazilian version of "little Finland" with euro architecture, cobblestone streets, small shops and lots of trout restaurants. Just outside of Resende.
Paraty - A beautiful historical town on the green coast
Petropolis - A lovely city in the tops of the mountains. A good place to cool off from the Rio sun!
