Schaffhausen is a city in north-eastern Switzerland on the river Rhine, next to the German border.

Understand
Schaffhausen is an old city that become a member of the Swiss Confederation in 1501. In 1944 Schaffhausen was accidentally bombed by United States airforce that mistook neutral Swiss town for Germany. Current population of Schaffhausen is about 33700.

By train
From Zurich. - Getting to Schaffhausen is a little tricky, as one has to cross German territory. If you wouldn't cross the German boarder, it's also possible to take the train over Winterthur.

Local buses, on foot in the centre.

- walk in the old city and admire the renaissance buildings
- visit the Munot fortress
- Rhine Falls, the largest waterfalls in Europe. Walk or take the bus there. Visitors can see the waterfalls up close from several viewing platforms, and can also take a boat up to an outcropping in the middle of the falls.
