Semarang is the capital of Central Java in Indonesia. The city's name derives from the Javanese words "asem" and "arang" which literary translate to "scarce tamarind." It was founded by Ki Pandan Arang who is said have also named Salatiga and Boyolali. The city is a wonderful example of the "melting pot" concept, with representatives from Javanese, Chinese, Indian and Arabian cultures.
