Understand

The South or the Southern States are generally considered either to be those states that joined the Confederacy during the American Civil War of the 1860's, or those states in which slavery was legal in 1860. Despite the passage of almost one and a half centuries, memories of The War run deep and loyalty to the Confederate side remain.

Confusing American history with geography and suggesting that the South is in the south of what is now the United States could get you into trouble. While the South was in the south in 1860's, many more states have since joined the Union and the South is now more east - south - east than south.
