Surin is a town in eastern Thailand, located approximately 50 km from the border with Cambodia. It is best known for its elephant roundup, which lasts for one week during November.

Get in

There are convenient bus services from Bangkok's Northern Bus Terminal (Moh Chit). There is also a railway station with several daily trains from Bangkok's Hualamphong Train Station.

Get around

Unlike Bangkok, here you can still enjoy a ride in a human powered tricycle.

See

Once a year there's a big Elephant Roundup when you can expect the hotels to be packed.

Do

Take a guided tour of Khmer temples with Pirom (the proprieter of Pirom's guesthouse). Tours can look pricey if you are on a tight budget but what you get for that makes it good value.

A good value for money hotel is Nid Diao (also going by the name of Saeng Thong) in the main street from the railway station, with comfortable rooms

Get out

You can use Surin as a base to visit Sikhoraphum, a set of temple ruins in a quiet surrounding at about 30 km.

You can also visit the elephant training village Tha Tum at about 60 km.
