Overview
Offering guaranteed sun, sparkling seas, desert dunes, and unspoilt beaches, Umm Al Quwain is fast developing into a major leisure and sporting destination in the United Arab Emirates.
Geography
Umm Al Quwain, one of the 7 members of the United Arab Emirates, covers an area of 800 square kilometres and stretches from the beautiful, lush green coastal mangroves lining the shores of the Arabian Gulf, inland across the rolling sand dunes to the fertile oasis surrounding Falaj Al Moalla. The Umm Al Quwain Emirate is centrally located between Sharjah and Ras Al Khaimah and extends 52 kilometres into the interior, to the bountiful AI-Batha valley. The old city of Umm Al Quwain, scenically located on a north-pointing promontory has retained its peace, charm and distinctive character. It has developed between the sea and a deep creek overlooking the mangrove lagoons and quaint sandy islands and inlets. The coast to the south offers some of the finest unspoilt shores to be found in the Emirates, with clean, clear waters and white sandy beaches. The enchanting mangroves on the opposite side of the city provide a haven for fishermen, wildlife and a variety of birds.
Al Sinniyah, the largest of the islands is a marine sanctuary covering 90 square kilometres. This was once the original settlement site but now shelters huge colonies of cormorants, other seabirds, gazelle and al qaram trees. Dugong (sea cows) and turtles can be spotted in the shallow waters surrounding the island. The Barracuda Beach Resort can arrange group visits to these islands.
The inland oasis and hinterland town of Falaj Al Moalla lies some 50 kilometres from Umm Al Quwain city. The road winds its way between the rising dunes alongside the green Al Batha valley that dissects the desert plain providing fruitful areas for agriculture and houses small farming settlements. From November to March temperatures are idyllic and average 26C in daytime and 15C at night. Temperatures can rise over 40C in the peak of the summer and the humidity levels are high. Rainfall is minimal and averages 42 millimetres a year. The coastline experiences cooling sea breezes during the day.
History
The name Umm Al Quwain is derived from Umm AI Quwatain, which means ‘Mother of two powers', a reference to the powerful seafaring tradition of this emirate.
The modern history of Umm Al Quwain dates back some 200 years when the Al Ali tribe moved their capital from Al Sinniyah Island to its present location in the mid 18th century, when the sweet water supply dried up. Prior to this they were based in Al Dour located 10 kilometres to the south of Umm Al Quwain. Archaeological finds here have unearthed what was once a flourishing town; the largest town in the whole of south-eastern Arabia dating back a little under 2,000 years ago and covering an area of 4 kilometres by one kilometre. Excavations have revealed substantial houses, impressive tombs, stone jars and Egyptian and Syrian glassware from a time period of between 260 BC and 200 AD. The history of the area is characterised by the staunch loyalty of the inhabitants to the Al Moalla ruling family established by Shaikh Rashid Bin Majid Bin Khalfan Al Moalla, as Ruler of Umm Al Quwain in 1768. The present ruler, H.H. Shaikh Rashid Bin Ahmed Al Moalla became ruler in 1981 and is a member of the Supreme Council and a fervent supporter of the UAE Federation. The emirate enjoys stability and economic prosperity under His able guidance and foresight.
Economy
The traditional economy based on pearl diving, fishing, agriculture and breeding of livestock has diversified and expanded rapidly with the foresight of the emirate's development policy. The expansion of the creek and wharves, the construction of the Ahmed Bin Rashid Port, offering 10 metre deep births and the establishment of the Free Trade Zone has all further boosted the pace of industrialisation. With an additional emphasis on infrastructure and expansion, several modern and commercial activities have been established in the emirate such as the Umm Al Quwain Cement Industries and Cement Factory. Locally manufactured aluminium is exported to Europe and the G.C.C. countries. Investors have been attracted by the many incentives offered by the government including competitive land prices and efficient procedures to facilitate the establishment of small and medium sized industries. These include the lighting and recycling industries, manufacture of building materials, industrial cables and pre fabricated houses. Fishing is still a main enterprise and Umm Al Quwain is famous for its supply of grouper and oriental sole and is a major exporter of sea foods throughout the Middle East and Europe. Inland, the farming settlements in the fertile Al Batha Valley produce a substantial quantity of fresh fruit and vegetables. Cultivated home-grown crops of major importance include dates, tomatoes, lemons etc. The first poultry farm in the UAE was established in Falaj Al Moalla. Development of modern animal husbandry management has proven this area as a large supplier of meat, poultry and dairy products to the local market.
Culture & Customs
The traditional activities of fishing, falconry, camel racing and dhow building are still evident in Umm Al Quwain emirate. The Shahin (or peregrine) falcon can be spotted here along with the famous light skinned hunting hawk, the AI-Hur. Camel racing, an activity of great importance within the community, is held in Al Labsa on the road to Falaj Al Moalla at one of the most attractive and active racetracks in the emirates. The dhow building yard is still very much in existence where skilled craftsmen continue to assemble these traditional boats. In the old town, around the fort, the once charming old coral stone houses still display features of the original architecture and intricate sculptured plaster work.
What to See
The Aquarium The Aquarium, part of the Marine Research Centre is open to visitors by prior arrangement. Located on the headland beside the new port, the aquarium displays in jars the large variety of fish and sea life found in the region including rays, snakes and corals. Islands of Umm Al Quwain
To the east of the mainland peninsula lies a unique stretch of coastline consisting of sandy islands surrounded by dense mangrove forests, separated by a series of creeks. The largest of the seven islands is Al Sinniyah, followed by Jazirat Al Ghallah and Al Keabe, all of which are visible from the old town. Tucked in between these and the coastal plains are the smaller islands of Al Sow, Al Qaram, Al Humaidi, Al Chewria and Al Harmala. The Madaar creek running between the islands provides a navigable waterway for fisherman even at low tide when the average depth is less than a few feet. The Barracuda Beach Resort can arrange group visits to these islands.
Camel Racing
Going inland, the road to the Camel race track at Al Labsa affords an exceptionally pretty drive. This lovely race track is set in the lee of large dunes to the left of the road leading to Falaj Al Moalla. During the winter months, the camels race early in the morning on Thursdays and Fridays and spectators are welcome. Camel caravans are a familiar site crossing the desert from one race track to another. The dunes in this area, interspersed with wooded dales, provide a challenging terrain for off road desert drivers or as they are commonly called ‘dune bashers’. They also offer some of the most picturesque desert camping spots in the emirates promising an unforgettable night under the Arabian stars. Group camping trips can be arranged.
Leisure, Recreation and Sports
For active water and sports enthusiasts or nature lovers, Umm Al Quwain is the perfect holiday venue.

Pink flamingos, jumping fish, turtles, numerous crabs and rays may all be seen in their natural environment. Avid birdwatchers can enjoy the wonderful wildlife at Khor al Beidah and other popular sights lie to the south and east of the town. Al Sinniyah Island is also visible from the corniche. The shallow tidal lagoons and mudflats create the perfect feeding, nesting and resting habitat for several species of heron and plover, Greater Flamingo, gulls and terns.
Between November and March, hundreds of Great Cormorants are regularly spotted flying just a few feet above the sea, as they move from one sand bar to another. Coastal flats and dune tracks around the lagoon to the south east of the promontory provide excellent mountain hiking terrain, varied enough to suit any age and ability.
