Uppsala is a university city in Uppland province in Svealand, south central Sweden. With a population og 180000 it is the fourth largest city in Sweden.

Get In

The train from Stockholm takes 35 minutes. Bus 801 go to Arlanda Airport (SEK 80).

Get Around

There are many local green busses. A city ticket is SEK 20.

  • Uppsala University. Established in 1477 the oldest university in Scandinavia. The University Museum in the Gustavianum house opposite the university main building.
  • Uppsala Cathedral[1] Being Sweden's Lutheran Archbishop's seat it is the most important church in Sweden.
  • Uppsala castle. With big halls and paintings, as well as older remnants of the 16th century castle built by the Vasa dynasty.
  • Carl Linnaeus' Hammarby. Mansion outside of Uppsala.
  • Carl Linnaeus Garden with the Orangery.
  • Botanical Gardens, the bigger garden at the university.
  • The Uppland Museum, located in a former water mill building.
  • Bror Hjort House for those who like naivistic paintings.
  • Carolina Rediviva university library with the Silver Bible.

Eat

  • Hambergs [2] Fyristorg 8, tel: +46+ 018712150, email: info@hambergfisk.se. Great seafood in this relaxed atmosphere. Except for deserts they serve nothing but seafood. Mains SEK 150.

Drink

  • The university has a mandatory student club system called Student Nations. There are thirteen nations, each with a headquarters where one can dance, drink, and meet people. To get in there you need to know a student and get a guest card.
  • Café Ofvandahls is a traditional old café that has old roots and atmosphere.

Being a college town there are many bars and clubs beyond just the Nations. One near the train station seems to have a fairly active calendar of internationally touring acts.

  • O´Connors Stora Torget 1, tel: +46 018144010. This place claims to be irish, but it looks more scottish. It has a great selection of irish, belgian and swedish beers. Beers are SEK 45-65, SEK 20 entrance when live music.

Getting Online

There are several possibilities to get on the Internet in Uppsala. The City Library offers several computers for free (using a queue system). Also Sidewalk Express have two Internet cafés where you can get online for about 2 Euro/h, one at the central station and one at the fast food restaurant "Saffets", situated on the main square.

  • Uppsala City Hostel [3] has some of the cheapest accommodations in town and free wifi.

Get Out

  • Älvkarleby Small city with beaches, the Dalalven river with salmon fishing, and Golf courses.
