Stolberg in Harz, lies in Saxony-Anhalt of Germany. Known as the pearl of southern Harz, it is set in the wooded valleys of southern Harz.

Understand

The half-timbered houses of this medieval town date from 15th to 18th century. For this reason, in 1993, Stolberg was the first city to be designated a historical city of Europe.

Get in

By car

  • from west: from Göttingen, B27 to Herzberg, B243 to Bad Sachsa, then via Walkenried, Neustadt, Rottleberode to Stolberg
  • from east: A14 to exit after Saalebrücke, Sandersleben, Hettstedt, in the city dort first in direction of Eisleben, in city center in direction of Harzgerode, just before Harzgerode turn to left to Stolberg
  • as of 2006 on freeway A38 to exit Rossla, then 15km to Stolberg

By train

Stolberg (Harz) has its own train station, It is located near by the city center, approx. 15 minutes to walk. With heavy baggage call a taxi: 034654 579.

By plane

next bigger airport is Leipzig, from there with train or car

  • The local historical museum / old mint, Niedergasse 19, phone: 034654/85960. opening hours: Mo, Tu: closed, We-Fr: 10-12:30, 13-17 o'clock, Sa/Su/holidays 10-12, 13-17 o'clock, is a splendorous half-timbered house, which contains a completely received historical mint.
  • the museum Altes Bürgerhaus, Rittergasse 14, phone: 034654/80152. Mo: closed, Tu-Su/holidays 13-17 o'clock, is an original half timbered house from 1470. The interior shows the living conditions at this former times in an impressive way.

  • the city hall dominates the central market place. It is a multi-storey half timbered house without its own stairs. There are replaced by a public way beside the house. Splendid paintings at the front shows the different trades of the city.
  • The coffee maker museum in the hotel Beutel shows a multitude of old pots and cans, but there is also fresh coffee.

  • The Stolberger Lerchen (Stolberger larks) are not roasted songbirds, but a solid meal with roasted sausages and savoy cabbage.

  • the Josephskreuz, is an iron construction held together by 100.000 rivets. Guests, which climed the tower, can enjoy the marvellous view over the mountains. opens daily 10- 17 o'clock or up to the break-down of the darkness. In case of thunderstorm, storm, freezing up, strong fog, rain or snow it remains closed. (distance: 5km)
  • the Heimkehle, is one the the largest and most impressing karst caves of Germany. May - October daily 10-17 o'clock; November-April daily 10-16. Guidances as required, in general each hour, at least 5 persons. (distance 9km)

Stolberg is an ideal point of departure for excursions to the mountains of Harz. You can explore bizarre rocks, rare plants, listen stories from the time of emporers in old castles, visit mines and caves or take a journey with the old railway Harzquerbahn.
